Retriever Safety & Maintenance
Use, Care & Warnings
Proper use, routine cleaning, correct extension and collapsing procedures, and safety warnings help protect both the user and the retriever.
Last updated: August 19, 20261. Intended Use
Max Disctance retrievers are designed to recover disc golf discs from water, brush, trees, and other hard-to-reach locations. Retriever attachments are intended for disc retrieval and should not be used as toys, striking tools, pry bars, climbing aids, or for other unintended purposes.
To retrieve a disc, extend the pole to the needed length, gently place the retrieval attachment against the disc, secure the disc, and pull the retriever directly back toward you.
2. Inspect Before Every Use
Before each use:
- Inspect pole sections for cracks, splitting, fraying, splintering, dents, bending, or other damage.
- Confirm that the retrieval attachment and jam nut are present and securely tightened.
- Check suction cups and other attachment components for damage or missing parts.
- Do not use a product that appears damaged, loose, or unsafe.
3. Properly Extending the Retriever
The telescoping pole is not designed for excessive side loading or force, especially when fully extended. Extend the pole beginning with the section closest to the retrieval attachment and work back toward the handle.
- Fully seat/lock each section using normal hand force.
- Do not swing or whip the pole to extend the sections.
- When retrieving a disc, pull straight back whenever possible.
- Avoid twisting, jerking, striking, prying, levering, or loading the pole sideways.
4. Properly Collapsing Carbon-Fiber Retrievers
Collapsing a carbon-fiber retriever out of order can allow a smaller section to shift off-center inside a larger section. The edge of the larger section can then strike the top of the smaller section, causing chips, cracks, delamination, or carbon-fiber splintering.
Collapse each section carefully and make sure the smaller sections remain properly aligned before continuing. Repeated impacts from improper collapsing can weaken sections and lead to premature failure.
5. Cleaning, Dirt & Moisture
Keep all sections clean and dry to maximize the life of the pole. Dirt, sand, grit, mud, and other debris can work their way between telescoping sections and act like an abrasive, accelerating wear and reducing the ability of sections to lock properly.
- Clean the retriever periodically based on how and where it is used.
- If the pole has been used in dirty, sandy, or muddy water, clean it more frequently.
- Allow components to dry thoroughly before long-term storage.
- If mud or grit is on the outside of an extended section, remove it before collapsing the section whenever possible.
6. Retrieval Attachment & Jam Nut
Max Disctance retrievers are designed so the retrieval attachment can be removed for maintenance or replacement. For this reason, a permanent thread-locking compound is not used to secure the attachment on a Max Disctance retriever.
Before each use, make sure the retrieval attachment is properly threaded onto the pole and secured with the included jam nut. Failure to secure the jam nut can allow the attachment to loosen or fall off during use.
If a Max Disctance attachment is installed on another manufacturer’s pole, the user is responsible for using an appropriate secure fastening method for that pole and attachment combination.
7. Suction Cup Care
Suction cups may grip better when slightly wet. Dirt, dust, and residue can reduce suction performance. Periodically clean the cups by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft scrub brush, then rinse them and allow them to dry.
Inspect the suction-cup stems and cups before use. Replace damaged or missing components before continuing to use the attachment.
8. Safety Warnings
Electrical Hazard
Max Disctance telescoping retrievers are conductive. Never use or raise a retriever near overhead power lines, energized equipment, or electrical sources. Never use a telescoping retriever during a lightning storm. Contact with electricity can cause serious injury, electrocution, or death.
Pinch & Impact Hazard
Keep hands and fingers clear of moving telescoping sections and pinch points while extending or collapsing the pole. Use care while transporting and operating a long extended pole around people, property, vehicles, and other objects.
Carbon-Fiber Splinter Hazard
Damaged carbon fiber can produce sharp fibers or splinters that can puncture or irritate skin. If a section is cracked, split, frayed, delaminated, or splintered, stop using it immediately. Gloves are recommended when handling damaged carbon-fiber components.
Choking Hazard
Retriever attachments and repair components can contain small parts. They are not children’s toys. Keep small parts away from young children.
9. Damaged or Worn Components
Do not continue using a component that shows structural damage or has become unsafe. Max Disctance carbon-fiber retrievers are designed to be repairable, and individual replacement sections and many other components are available separately.
10. Warranty Information
Warranty coverage, exclusions, claim requirements, and the carbon-fiber extended-warranty registration program are now provided on a separate Warranty Policy page.
